idk anything (demo) by San Holo

San Holo has been on a creative journey throughout quarantine. ‘idk anything (demo)’ is his magnum opus in the stay vibrant ever expanding musical collection. “It’s about not knowing where you belong and feeling insignificant.” San Holo wrote in a post announcing the new song.

Aside from being a huge step in a different direction for the headlining electronic music artist, San Holo – who is known for showcasing his vulnerabilities – is at new heights of coexisting with his emotions and his music.

Let’s look at the lyrics:

Been walking around for hours
Still don’t know where to go
Home is where the heart is
I don’t wanna go home
Run into a friend
We talk about some show
Even though I’d much rather walk alone

I have no direction
I’m high and I’m low
I can’t seem to stand still
One day I’ll take it slow
I run into a friend
Pass a smile back and forth
Then I just pretend that I really have to go

Suddenly it’s clear to me
That I don’t know
Anything
Suddenly it’s clear to me
That I don’t know
Anything, anything at all

Never been the smartest
But I’ve learned a lot
Still looking for something
I just don’t know what
People come and go
I’m scared I forgot
What it really feels like to be in love

Time goes by
I’m getting old
In a hundred years I’m just a story to be told
I will live on, but not for long
In a hundred years I’m just another someone

Suddenly it’s clear to me
That I don’t know
Anything
Suddenly it’s clear to me
That I don’t know
Anything, anything at all

Suddenly it’s clear to me
That I don’t mean
Anything
Suddenly it’s clear to me
That I don’t mean
Anything, anything at all

… but at least I mean something to you

idk anything (demo) lyrics by Sander Van Dijck

‘idk anything’ spoke to me as if I were in the room with San Holo as he was writing the song. That’s the reason we love him and artists like him. We relate, we see ourselves our own lives in theirs. A reminder that we all must be more compassionate to one another.

The song throughout is an acoustic anthem that I’d compare to artists like Bon Iver. In the final line, San sings, “but at least I mean something to you” and the music explodes into heavy distortion and epic guitar layering that melts your face clean off. A metaphor for our lives. How at one moment you can not know anything and in the next breath it all makes sense.

Here’s a quote from San Holo about the Stay Vibrant Music Collection:

The reason for the stay vibrant archives is just to have a place where i can post music that i make that doesn’t necessarily belong to an EP or Album or Project… As a musician I make a lot of music and obviously there will be tracks that i make that will fade away or drown at some point, which is a shame, because I believe one of my strongest assets is the fact that I can actually make music in all kinds of genres (that still have the san holo feeling and emotion cause i make it) in 10 year this might all be over And i know i’d regret not using this platform I have rn to share my creations with the world and using the stay vibrant archive we make it very clear; this doesn’t belong to an album or campaign, it’s just a peek inside my musical mind.
