Fleeting by Peridot

This is a guest post by Eddy Marshall.

Peridot is a group of musicians that know their brand. Beautifully arranged songs, cozy morning cups of warmth, and ceaselessly reminding you that no matter how much affection you shower upon them, they will always and forever, “love you more.”

The inimitable duo has nestled even deeper into the beauty of their talent with “Fleeting”, their latest song and video release.

First, the video begins with birds chirping and Hillary Reynolds walking into focus with a characteristic warm mug. Gentle piano playing, softened colors and softer lyrics envelop the listener. She sings of the passage of time in a loved ones eyes, familial laughter at mistakes, how it all rushes by and how “there’s so little we can do.”

Strings are dotted here and there in the first verse, but it isn’t until the end of the chorus that we get to hear Trevor Jarvis’ cello playing join the conversation in earnest. He is joined by an ensemble of string players for this song, which is a change for the band. Where they may have opted for vocal harmonies and guitar in the past, they now lean the softer sound of Hilary’s sole voice over a bed of violins and violas.

The song ends with a resolute IV to I cadence, gracefully settling in the sadness of the final chorus, “Fleeting, letting you go. Dreaming, keeping you close. We’re over the moon my love, so fleeting and I’m still looking back at you.”

The ending resembles a hymn that will no doubt feel right at home at Peridot’s upcoming show at Lawrence Chapel where they will be performing with the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra and Lawrence Arts Academy Girl Choir on April 27th.
