Black Lagoon by Still Corners

Still Corners have some notoriety already, but this song is too good not to write about, so here we are. With influences that span the spacey experiments of Vangelis, the expansive, cinematic sounds of Ennio Morricone, and glamorous ’80s synth pop, Still Corners is the project of Greg Hughes and Tessa Murray. They formed in 2009.

I was initially grabbed by the guitar in this song. The slow strum of the chords, and the muted melody. “Black Lagoon” pulled me in. It’s hypnotic. Which might be what the band were going for when they wrote the lyric “Can’t get away”.

‘Black Lagoon’ has a beautiful eeriness, the harmonies are rich and powerful, it’s atmospheric, and I immediately imagined myself in their world. Still Corners painted a picture beautifully, if you want an evocative song, ‘Black Lagoon’ is a good one to try.
