Hey You by JONA OAK

Hey You, if you’re reading this, listen to Jona Oak’s newest single. “Hey You” is a brilliant song by Jona Oak about the fragility of our future and the impact humans have had on the planet.

The video shows us a vast landscape, a beautiful mountainous region covered in green trees, before zooming into an abandoned factory building. Graffiti the only presence of the effect human’s have had on the planet. Jona Oak stands alone, herself being slowly covered by plant life. The video really does a fantastic job of illustrating the meaning of this song, “It’s a matter of songwriting and activism.”

A deeper listen to “Hey You” and you’ll hear outstanding instrumentation, arrangement, and melody. The dark chords and darker beat lay this song out for all to hear. A rhythmic cello adds a nice repeated motif underlying every other element, adding subtlety, smoothness and warmth.

From her bio:

There is something mystic about Jona Oak. The evocative sound of her name gives us a foretaste of her love of nature and the promise of a spiritual artistic world. Born in the United States, Jona Oak grew up in a multicultural family and developed a nomad musical sensitivity from an early age. She started composing her own songs as a teenager and went on a musical journey in the wake of Joni Mitchell. Her spiritual folk-pop music draws inspiration both from jazz and soul music. Jona Oak’s first album A Step at a Time will be released next fall.”

Directed by Remi Geofroy (director of Sola and Drink for La Chica), “Hey You” is a militant video conceived to raise awareness of the fragile ecosystem of our planet and of the vulnerability of our future. The floral artwork (superimposition technique) was imagined and created by Jona Oak in order to poetically illustrate this theme. Jona Oak is signed on Iki Records, distributed by ABSILONE and sponsored by Little Big Beat.
