Give Me Time by Cereus Bright

Cereus Bright is one of my favorite bands. Back in 2014, I was begrudgingly dragged to a Sturgill Simpson concert by my brother and Cereus Bright happened to be the opening act. Thank god he did, because I fell in love. With the vocal harmonies, the acoustic guitar and mandolin combo, and the performance. My mind was blown. And, not that it’s a competition, but Cereus Bright could blow Sturgill Simpson out of the water any day of the week. Okay, now that I’ve gotten my spiel out of the way, let’s talk about the band’s new song, “Give Me Time”.

The first of two singles from Cereus Bright’s upcoming sophomore album. “Give Me Time” is a small departure from the band’s previous catalogue. The song has these string swells in the intro that give it a bit of a retro vibe. The lyrics evoke someone going through a depression. Specifically in the chorus, “Don’t let yourself get so far out / There’s only shadows that far down / Here’s your sign / I can save you / Just give me time.”

“Give Me Time” is haunting and intimate. The closeness of lead singer Tyler Anthony’s voice in the verses grows into this poignant falsetto in the chorus’. The song culminates in a beautiful orchestral outro. Where we hear the same rhythm of the verse playing under soaring string parts that continue to build and soar higher until the final moments. Like a free fall just before you hit the ground.
